Workshop Host: The Black Metropolis Research Consortium (BMRC) is a Chicago-based membership association of libraries, universities, museums, community/arts organizations, and other archival institutions. The BMRC’s mission is to connect all who seek to document, share, understand and preserve Black experiences. It is the vision of BMRC to be essential to promoting discovery, preservation, and use of Black historical collections.
Collection Partner: Honey Pot Performance is a creative collaborative chronicling Afro-feminist and Black diasporic subjectivities amidst the pressures of contemporary global life.
The Chicago Black Social Culture Map (CBSCM) is a public humanities platform and community archive for the preservation of Chicago’s Black social cultural lineage—past, present, and future. The goal of the CBSCM is to document and share the lived experiences of Black Chicagoans from the Great Migration through the rise of House music and, in doing so, create an opportunity for this chronically under-documented constituency to see their histories represented as written record and archive and to share these histories with a wide demographic, from the casually curious to academic experts. Materials in the repository include audio-visual content such as born-digital recorded oral histories, photography and video of panels hosted by the CBSCM and Honey Pot Performance (HPP), and digitized audio from cassette tapes and CDs. The collection also hosts two-dimensional materials, including ephemera (paper flyers, posters, small hand-held “pluggers,”), administrative notes, transcriptions of recorded content, and digitized photographs.
About Workshop: The Chicago CAW had over 40 volunteers join us on Tuesday! Thanks to everyone’s hard work, we inventoried and inspected 323 items, which left HPP with only 25 items to inventory. From that, we were able to produce an inventory that will serve as the basis for an audiovisual preservation plan for Honey Pot Performance.
